Medicaid Coverage

The Maryland Medical Assistance program covers:

All seven NRT and medications are covered. Individual and phone counseling are also covered. There is a duration limit of 180 days per year. Step therapy is required for inhaler and nasal spray (90 day trial). Daily quality limits apply for all medication.

Note: the Affordable Care Act requires all Medicaid programs cover all tobacco cessation medications beginning January 1, 2014. If a medication is marked here as not being covered, there is not yet evidence that Medicaid has complied with this requirement. Patients should call their Medicaid program and ask how to receive these medications.

Health Insurance Marketplace Coverage

All plans in the Health Insurance Marketplace are required to cover tobacco cessation treatment. Specific coverage varies by plan. Check with your insurance plan to find out what is covered.

Private Insurance Coverage

Health plans that cover prescription drugs in Maryland are required to cover two 90-day courses of prescription NRTs per year. Coverage of over-the-counter NRTs is not required.

Eligibility to recieve counseling: Age 13 or older for phone counseling, age 18 or older for text and web based support. For medication: age 18 or older, while supplies last, and meet basic health requirements.
